The Horse-Beating Dream

Also known as the horse dream, the dream of the mare.

Raskolnikov dreams himself back into childhood, watching a mare beaten to death while a crowd laughs and urges the violence on. The dream horrifies him because pity and cruelty are no longer abstract positions in his mind; they arrive as a bodily memory before the crime.

Part I, Chapter VI

After waking, he recoils from the murder plan and then moves toward it again, showing how little revulsion alone can free him.
