The small-credit trade that brings desperate people to Alyona Ivanovna. A pledge is an object handed over for cash, with interest and deadlines that can swallow the object's value. The system is ordinary city business, but in Raskolnikov's mind it begins to stand for a whole economy of humiliation.
Part I, Chapter VII
The pledges in Alyona's flat become evidence and temptation, but Raskolnikov's handling of them is panicked and strangely useless.
Part III, Chapter V
Porfiry questions people who left pledges with Alyona, giving the ordinary paperwork of pawnbroking a police afterlife.
