Person
Alexander Grigorievitch Zametov
Also known as Zametov, Alexander Grigorievitch, the head clerk.
A young clerk connected with the police office, noticed for his fashionable appearance and the rings on his fingers. He belongs to the bureaucratic world that Raskolnikov fears and despises, but he is also young enough to be flattered, teased, and drawn into risky conversation.
Part II, Chapter VI
At the Crystal Palace, Raskolnikov toys with Zametov by talking almost openly about the murders and the stolen things, turning suspicion into a theatrical game.
Part III, Chapter V
Zametov's place in Porfiry's circle makes the earlier restaurant scene part of the pressure gathering around Raskolnikov.
Part III, Chapter VI
After the tavern goading he half-suspects Raskolnikov and watches him, unable to decide whether the man is mad, ill, or guilty.
