Also known as Luzhin, Pyotr Petrovitch.
The suitor chosen for Dounia, first described in her mother's letter. He is respectable, solvent, and useful, but his own remarks suggest that he prefers a wife who will owe him gratitude. Raskolnikov sees the marriage as a transaction at once.

His first visit to Raskolnikov's room confirms his vanity and his wish to manage Dounia's family from above.
Part III, Chapter III
Calling on Dounia and her mother, his pompous condescension collides with Raskolnikov's open contempt, and the engagement begins to crack.
Part IV, Chapter II
Dounia breaks with him after his manipulative letter and his conduct before the family.
Part V, Chapter III
He plants a hundred-rouble note on Sonia and accuses her of theft, hoping to disgrace Raskolnikov by association.
