Sofya Semyonovna Marmeladov

Also known as Sonia, Sonia Marmeladov, Sofya Semyonovna.

Marmeladov's daughter, known first through his tavern confession. She has taken a yellow ticket to keep Katerina Ivanovna and the children from starving, and lives apart because that ticket makes ordinary respectability impossible. Marmeladov speaks of her as both sacrificed and holy, while the chapter keeps her just outside the room until his story has done its work.

Part II, Chapter VI

She comes to her father's deathbed in her poor finery, terrified and gentle, and becomes visible to Raskolnikov as more than a story.

Part IV, Chapter IV

In her room she reads the raising of Lazarus to Raskolnikov, her faith trembling but unhidden.

Part V, Chapter III

When Luzhin accuses her of theft, Lebeziatnikov exposes the planted money and saves her publicly.

Part V, Chapter IV

Raskolnikov tells her he killed Alyona and Lizaveta. Sonia's answer is not curiosity but shared suffering, prayer, and the cross.

Part VI, Chapter VII

She presses a cypress cross on Raskolnikov and begs him to go to the crossroads, bow down, and confess his crime aloud to the earth.

Epilogue

She follows Raskolnikov to Siberia, wins the convicts' affection, and waits beside him until his inward resistance begins to yield.
