Raskolnikov's Confession to Sonia

Raskolnikov tells Sonia that he killed Alyona and Lizaveta. The confession is intimate, jagged, and incomplete, full of theory, pride, and misery rather than clean remorse. Sonia receives it as a call to suffer with him and to push him toward public truth.

Part VI, Chapter VIII

The private confession becomes public when Raskolnikov goes to the police office and names himself.

Epilogue

Sonia's response to the confession continues in Siberia as patient presence rather than argument.
