The Margin

Person

Charlotte Lucas

Also known as Charlotte, Miss Lucas.

Elizabeth's closest friend, a sensible, plain woman of twenty-seven with no fortune and few illusions. She holds that happiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance, and that a comfortable home is worth more than romance.

Chapter XVIII

At the Netherfield ball she counsels Elizabeth to be ruled by prudence rather than feeling, a hint of her own coming choice.

Chapter XXII

She accepts Mr. Collins days after Elizabeth refuses him, choosing security over sentiment, and keeps her own counsel about the bargain.

Chapter XXVIII

As mistress of Hunsford she orders her days to see as little of Mr. Collins as she decently can, and is, by her own measure, content.

Chapter XXXII

She watches Mr. Darcy call often at the parsonage and wonders, shrewdly, whether it is Elizabeth who draws him there.

Chapter XXXVIII

She parts from Elizabeth at the visit's end, having made of a loveless match a tolerable life.
