Elizabeth's closest friend, a sensible, plain woman of twenty-seven with no fortune and few illusions. She holds that happiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance, and that a comfortable home is worth more than romance.
Chapter XVIII
At the Netherfield ball she counsels Elizabeth to be ruled by prudence rather than feeling, a hint of her own coming choice.
Chapter XXII
She accepts Mr. Collins days after Elizabeth refuses him, choosing security over sentiment, and keeps her own counsel about the bargain.
Chapter XXVIII
As mistress of Hunsford she orders her days to see as little of Mr. Collins as she decently can, and is, by her own measure, content.
