A pompous young clergyman and the cousin who will inherit Longbourn under the entail, since Mr. Bennet has no son. Solemn, self-important, and forever quoting his patroness Lady Catherine de Bourgh, he comes to Longbourn meaning to choose a wife among his cousins.

A letter announces the visit of the cousin who will inherit Longbourn, so thick with pompous civility and with his patroness that Mr. Bennet reads it aloud for sport.
Chapter XV
He arrives resolved to choose a wife among his cousins, fixes first on Jane, and is steered by Mrs. Bennet toward Elizabeth.
