Person
Mary Bennet
Also known as Mary.
The middle Bennet daughter, plain among handsome sisters and bookish to make up for it. She reads for maxims rather than pleasure and seizes any chance to display her accomplishments, with more diligence than taste.
Chapter VI
At a Lucas party she is impatient to display, and sings and plays longer than the company wishes, with more diligence than taste.
Chapter XVIII
At the Netherfield ball she seizes the instrument again until Mr. Bennet gently stops her before the whole room.
Chapter XLVII
While the house reels at Lydia's flight, she offers polished maxims on female virtue, learning nothing from the grief around her.
