Person
Dr. Watson
Also known as Watson.
The friend, fellow-lodger, and chronicler of Sherlock Holmes, a medical man who tries his own hand at his companion's methods of deduction. Genial, brave, and a little vain of his own observation, he serves as the steady, practical foil to Holmes's brilliance, and it is through his eyes that this case is told.
Chapter IV. Sir Henry Baskerville
He joins Holmes in shadowing a black-bearded watcher through the London streets, the eyes on a chase that ends with their quarry escaping in a hansom cab.
Chapter V. Three Broken Threads
Holmes proposes him as Sir Henry's trusted companion and protector for the journey to Devon, and Watson eagerly accepts the charge.
Chapter VI. Baskerville Hall
He travels down as the baronet's guardian and reaches the brooding Hall at nightfall, where in the dead of night he hears a woman sob somewhere in the house.
Chapter VII. The Stapletons of Merripit House
He tests the Grimpen postmaster about Barrymore, then meets the Stapletons and is twice and urgently warned by Beryl to take Sir Henry away from the moor.
Chapter VIII. First Report of Dr. Watson
He begins sending written reports to Holmes, sketching the moor neighbours and catching Barrymore at a stealthy midnight errand to a moor-facing window.
Chapter IX. The Light upon the Moor [Second Report of Dr. Watson]
He witnesses the quarrel between Sir Henry and Miss Stapleton, joins the night hunt for the convict, and sees a tall, solitary figure standing against the moon on a distant tor.
Chapter X. Extract from the Diary of Dr. Watson
Keeping a private diary now, he learns from Barrymore of a burned letter signed L. L. and of a second, unknown man hiding among the moor huts.
Chapter XI. The Man on the Tor
He interrogates Laura Lyons at Coombe Tracey, learns from Frankland of a food-bearing boy, and tracks the stranger to a hut among the old stone burrows.
Chapter XII. Death on the Moor
He discovers that the hut's tenant is Holmes himself, and is told that Stapleton is the hidden enemy, just before a body is found broken on the rocks.
Chapter XIV. The Hound of the Baskervilles
He lies in wait in the fog and fires on the hound with Holmes, helping bring the great beast down to save Sir Henry.
Chapter XV. A Retrospection
He draws the full story of the case from Holmes over the fire at Baker Street, filling in the last gaps.
