Person

Charles Bingley

Also known as Mr. Bingley, Bingley.

A young man of large fortune from the north of England who takes Netherfield Park and sets the neighbourhood astir. Amiable, open, and easily led, he is liked at once by everyone, and he is the close friend of Mr. Darcy, whose graver judgement he trusts perhaps too far.

Chapter III

He dances twice with Jane Bennet at the assembly and is plainly taken with her.

Chapter XI

Through Jane's stay at Netherfield his preference for her is plain to everyone, perhaps, but himself.

Chapter XVIII

At his own ball he dances with Jane and singles her out, and the neighbourhood holds the match as good as made.

Chapter XXI

He quits Netherfield for London and does not return, persuaded by his sisters and his friend that the attachment was unwise.

Chapter XXXV

Darcy's letter admits that he and Bingley's sisters persuaded him Jane was indifferent, and so kept him in London away from her.

Chapter LV

He comes back to Hertfordshire and proposes to Jane, his own heart having been steady all along.
