A charming young officer newly come to the militia at Meryton, with a handsome face and easy, winning manners. He quickly makes himself agreeable to all the neighbourhood, Elizabeth included.
Chapter XVI
He tells Elizabeth that Mr. Darcy cheated him of a living his late father had promised, and so wins her sympathy and deepens her dislike of Darcy.

He stays away from the Netherfield ball to avoid Mr. Darcy, and lets it be thought that delicacy keeps him off.

His attentions shift to a Miss King, newly come into ten thousand pounds; Elizabeth excuses in him the fortune-hunting she would condemn in another.

Darcy's letter gives the other side: Wickham took money in lieu of the living, ran through it, and then tried to elope with the young Georgiana Darcy for her fortune.
