The woman once engaged as companion to the young Georgiana Darcy. By Mr. Darcy's account in his letter she was in league with Mr. Wickham, and it was under her management at Ramsgate that he was able to recommend himself to Georgiana and very nearly carry off the scheme. On its discovery she was removed from her charge.
Chapter LII
She surfaces again in the search for the runaways: it is through her former connection that Mr. Darcy traces Wickham to his lodging in London.
